Hawkins Piccolo Trumpet Straight Mutes – Precision Tuning for Piccolo Performance
The Hawkins Piccolo Trumpet Straight Mutes solve one of the most common frustrations players face: unreliable tuning. Traditional piccolo trumpet mutes are notorious for sharp pitch, unstable slotting, and thin tone. These designs eliminate those compromises. They deliver accurate intonation across the full register, allowing you to play with confidence in demanding orchestral and solo repertoire.
Engineered specifically for Bb/A piccolo trumpet, these straight mutes maintain centred pitch from low register passages through to the upper clarino range. Notes slot securely. Attacks remain clean. The response feels controlled rather than restricted. Instead of fighting the mute, you can focus on musical phrasing and projection.
Tonally, the Hawkins Piccolo Trumpet Mutes produce a smooth, round, velvety sound that blends naturally within chamber ensembles and baroque orchestration. They avoid the brittle edge often associated with small straight mutes, preserving warmth while still providing the clarity required in performance settings. Whether you are preparing Bach, Handel, or modern orchestral excerpts, these mutes support a refined, professional sound.
Lightweight and precisely balanced, they fit securely in the bell without excessive resistance. The “VIENNA” is better suited for gradually flaring bells, whilst the “CHICAGO” fits the late flaring bells. With durable construction they resist dents and deformation, and are reliable for touring musicians and busy professionals. Compact enough to live permanently in your case, it is ready whenever repertoire calls for it.
You may not use a piccolo trumpet mute every week, but when the part demands it, precision matters. The Hawkins Piccolo Trumpet Straight Mutes deliver dependable tuning, controlled response, and consistent tonal colour — exactly what serious piccolo trumpet players require.
Marc Geujon (Principal Trumpet – Opera National de Paris, Prof. Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris):
“The piccolo straight works well too. Very useful tool for piccolo when you want a sound not too metallic.”
[VARIANTS: For gradually flaring bells, the VIENNA works better; for late flaring bells, the CHICAGO. If unsure which model suits your instrument, try both, and return one for a full refund. Or send a photo of your bell – we may be able to assist.]

Ethan Cogswell –
It’s perfect. There’s no debate, and I seldom ever use that word to describe anything in music but it’s truly the perfect picc straight mute. No pitch issues, no change in back pressure, NO weight at all, there’s nothing but positive things to say about this mute. I sold my old picc straight as soon as I played this thing.
